Edinburgh University Goth and Rock Society

About EdG&R

Back in the day (well, 1996 anyway), there was a student union building on Chambers Street that catered to the tastes of alternatively-inclined students. However, that shut down, and when the union said they'd no longer run alternative nights, some students decided to do it themselves, and EdG&R was born.

Since then, the society has grown steadily, put on all sorts of club nights and gigs, and had a great time doing it. We now have almost 200 members, with tastes ranging from heavy metal to punk and ska, from goth to cheesy 80s rock, from hardcore to indie, and everything in between.

All our events are organised by normal (ok, sort of...) students in their spare time. They are paid for by society money, and the profits go back into our funds, to pay for more clubs, gigs, CDs and so on. If you've got an idea for an event, don't keep it to yourself, talk to one of the committee members and make it a reality. You want to DJ? Run a club? Organise a gig? It's easier than you'd think, and we'll teach you. Or if you just want to meet some like-minded alternative music fans, EdG&R is the right place!

Membership

A year's membership of EdG&R costs the tiny sum of £3 (or £6 for non-students). For this, you get discounted entry to all of our events, as well as access to our music library. If you join in Freshers' Week, you'll also get a Freshers' Bag full of goodies, including our Fanzine and the Little Black Book (our guide to alternative Edinburgh), as well as all sorts of stickers, random free stuff we managed to procure from bands and labels, and even a CD featuring local alternative talent! If you join later on in the year, you should still get a bag provided we have some left...

To join in Freshers' Week, come and find our stall at the Societies Fair, on Wednesday and Thursday between 10 and 4 at the Pleasance. We have a 7 foot tall EdG&R banner, so we're hard to miss. If you miss the Societies Fair, then come along to any of our meetings or events and you can join there.
