• Edgar IRC Channel On irc.imaginarynet.org.uk (or 10.7.0.69 if you're on ResNet), channel #edgar. If you haven't heard of it, IRC is an online chat system.
• Announcements mailing list: Meeting minutes and other official EdG&R announcements are posted on this mailing list. All members are automatically subscribed, and can unsubscribe if they choose. It's a good way of seeing what's going on in the society.

Clubs

Edinburgh has a very good alternative music scene, with many clubs catering to a wide variety of tastes. Here are a few we can recommend:

• Studio 24 (myspace page) hosts Retribution, Scotland's biggest rock night. The playlist is relatively mainstream and you'll hear the same songs every week, but it's a good atmosphere and a fun night out, so some of us go there regularly. They also have a smaller room upstairs which alternates between more specialised genres each week, from metal to goth to good old fashioned rock and roll. Also worth checking out is DKY on Sunday nights, which is a good fun "rock night that doesn't take itself too seriously".
• The Hive (myspace page) run a variety of alternative nights (although watch out for the occasional cheesy pop), and offer cheap drinks (£1 for most drinks Sun-Thurs). It's the new home of the (in)famous Subway Cowgate, and is bigger and better - three bars and two dancefloors.
• Bannermans is a pub that offers live music almost every night. It's a good place to check out Edinburgh's local talent.
• Opium is a rock bar situated on the Cowgate, next to what used to be the Subway. It offers an alternative jukebox downstairs and a small dancefloor upstairs, and plays a variety of alternative (but not that alternative) music. If you go at the weekend, prepare to wait about half an hour for a drink...
• Gigantor is a club playing all sorts of alternative music, run by the SciFi Society. It runs every so often, in the Teviot Underground.
• Ascension is a popular bleepy goth type club, it used to run in Teviot Underground but now they've moved to Studio 24.
• Edinburgh has a big hardcore scene, and Cold Dead Hands Collective is an organisation that puts on some very good gigs, mostly DIY hardcore but with a good variety of related genres, definitely worth checking out if you're into that stuff or just want to try something a bit different. Unfortunately their website doesn't appear to be working very well at the time of writing...

For the Musicians

Being a society full of music fans, we have quite a few members who also play music. Here's a list of shops and other resources for your music-playing needs:

• Scayles (can't find their website...) is a music shop with a good selection, reasonable prices and friendly staff, situated in the Newington area (very near Uni), at 50 St Patrick's Square.
• Sound Control have a good selection of instruments, particularly guitars, and lots of pro-audio equipment.
• Untapped Talent is a University society for musicians to meet, so if you're interested in joining or starting a band, it's worth checking out. They also put on gigs and other events, and provide a practise room for members.
• If you want (and can afford) a professional quality rehearsal studio, Banana Row is the place to go.
